The name comes (shamelessly) from Kubrick. Standing upright in its Richlite and oak stand, the board has something of that quality: monumental for its size, quietly purposeful, impossible to ignore. Bashing it with femurs is optional.
Rachel Hutchinson is a furniture designer and multi-disciplinary maker based in Wiltshire, working at the intersection of digital craft and fine hand-finishing. Her platters are made from reclaimed British FSC oak, shaped through a series of concentric arcs that give the board its distinctive character: a generous well at one end for olives, cornichons, saucisson or anything that needs containing, and a wide flat surface for the blade to roam free. It is a serving board, but one with both exemplary function and purpose. And, if you flip it over, it’s just a damn fine chopping board that’ll be very kind to your edge.
We were introduced to Rachel through an art collector who also collects an occasional knife from us. The collaboration was attuned and immensely rewarding: her board, our knives, a shared interest in making things that are worth keeping. The Monolith pairs with the Mako as the all-round blade, and also with the Grand Fromage, our legendary cheese knife, which comes with one of Tiffany’s hand-stitched leather cases.
The handles are also reclaimed British Oak, taken from a slightly different cut to reflect the different demands of the task.
“Designed to elevate everyday preparation into a considered ritual, the piece reflects the communal experience of sharing food. The grooves create a natural resting place while guiding the act of serving.”

Available as the board alone, the board with the Mako or the full set with both knives.
Washing
Wash by hand and dry immediately. The steel handles dishwashers, but the handle materials don't, and the blade will dull faster regardless. Ten seconds at the sink is the right habit.
Day-to-day maintenance
A honing steel realigns the edge between sharpenings. Two or three passes per side before heavy use is enough. You don't need to do this every time — just when the blade starts to feel less certain.
Sharpening
We offer complimentary workshop sharpening once a year for the first three years. After that we sharpen at cost. If you prefer to sharpen at home, our blades are ground to a 15-degree bevel — specify this if you use a third-party service, as most sharpen to 20 or 22 degrees as a default.
Storage
A magnetic strip or knife roll is ideal. Loose in a drawer accelerates dulling and risks chipping the edge. If a drawer is the only option, a blade guard solves both problems.
Handle care
Timber handles benefit from a light application of food-safe cutting board oil once or twice a year. Composite handles need nothing beyond normal washing.
